The Sound

The painting of a dated wooden bench in the space is Khongsawt’s third creation, an unassuming bench. However, it is essential for practically all Thai families, a bench that our parents or grandparents would love. Every time we look at it, we are reminded of the family members’ calls, murmurs, and conversations. It seems as though the bench speaks for itself.

Description

The Familiar Aged Wooden Bench from Recollection

This antique-looking long bench is something that Thai people are familiar with. One of those furnitures that is as vintage and reminiscent as its pristine appearance, it is a clear reminder of the people we were familiar with in the past.

No matter how old our grandpa is, he will definitely choose to sit there, and we have never heard him complain about back pain when sitting at all. That same wooden bench transports us back to our childhood, when we could hear our mother scolding us for being naughty on that place, or when we saw our father snuggle up on that bench, very uncomfortable. The artist picked up the nostalgic story told through the technique of painting oil on wood, the classic texture. Looking at the wooden bench evokes a non-existent sound but resounds in the eye of the beholder, the sound that echoes from your loved one’s favorite seat.

Key Message from the Artist

So many people struggle to obtain material things that, at times, lead to unhappy lives. This condition raises the question of whether “What is the value of life, existence, and truth?” In the meantime, everything in life is mere illusion or fictitiousness, created to satisfy endless lust.

From Khongsawat’s point of view, the truth is not in the present world anymore, but is to exist under the inevitable rules of time.
