Description
Get to Know the Painting
Suvarnabhumi or ‘Golden Land’ as mentioned is present in Indian and Buddhist literature – the word is then used to title the airport of Thailand despite its mythological context and unknown exact location. In stories however, it is known as a port that enables trading between wealthy Indian communities.
Technique
Lai Rot Nam or gilded black lacquer on canvas is an art form that dates back to the Ayutthaya period and is commonly performed on Thai decorative art. Black lacquer, a dark liquid substance from rak or the Burmese lacquer tree is gathered to heavily coat a wooden panel. After tracing the drawing, the panel would then be painted over with namya horadan, a yellow mixture with a sticky texture. A thin coat of lacquer is then layered over the surface and thin pieces of gold would be applied after leaving the lacquer to semi-dry. The piece would be washed after 20 hours to detach namya horadan, which would leave the gold layers in the unpainted areas, instantly giving the piece a gilded trace. These artworks can be seen in religious settings such as temples and also in Thai local furniture.
