Description

How I get started in art field & my success journey

First, let me introduce myself getting to know my background a bit more my name is “Suporn Keawda” I am fully Thai, Plus, the structural patterns of various natural phenomena such as the structure of rippled water circles, sea waves, and clouds, the content used to convey the connotation in the work are the principle of teachings in Buddhism, the principle of the Trilak, the impermanence of the Anatta, which is the doctrine of wisdom which is specific to Buddhism. The detailed Thai motifs of small animals with different beautiful details that live in the rivers and seas and have some imagination mixed together. Since I was born and raised in Ubon Ratchathani in Ubon Ratchathani province, there is a candle parade festival every year in which I have the opportunity to be a sculptor, so I absorb Thai patterns. Having an internship during vocational school, a vocational certificate at Ubon Vocational College, and drawing a watering Thai pattern. Therefore, I have a passion for drawing Thai patterns, and drawing is a basic subject that I like to draw regularly because everyone has to have a skating book with them all the time in the field of art fundamentals at Ubon Ratchathani Vocational College.

Moreover, I went to take the exam at Poh Chang at the vocational level. Department of National Arts. I passed the exam but didn’t have the opportunity to study because I didn’t have the money to pay for the tuition. So I decided not to go back to study at Ubon Vocational College at the vocational level. for 2 years. After finishing vocational, I told my friend that I would not continue studying and would go to work to earn money and think that it would be enough to make a living. After that, I decided not to study and go find a job related to the subject I studied. So I decided to go to Pattaya to apply to be a painter according to various galleries. I walked to apply for jobs at various galleries in Pattaya. It appears that no shop accepts because every shop has a full-time artist and says to myself that I have come a long way and I will I couldn’t go back, so I decided to draw portraits for tourists on the sidewalk by the sea or on the walking street in South Pattaya.

I started draw daily at night using street lights or street stalls. Each day can draw from 3,000 – 10,000 baht per day. If the customer likes it, I will get a good tip that day. The price for sitting as a model is 150/ picture, drawing from photos, 300-500 baht. Normally it will take 15-20 minutes to draw per picture. I start to draw from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m., or on some days till morning. From the day, I went to find work at the art gallery, they reject me. But when the gallery owner saw me sitting on the sidewalk painting, he invited me to join and paint at the art shop with an offer of 500 baht per picture. I agreed to paint at the art shop during the day. But at night I still paint pictures along the sidewalk. Plus, I draw for tourists and also create some artwork and in my spare time, I will sell my work at other galleries as well. And get the gallery work to do at home too. Moreover, (rental room) The rent at that time is 800 baht per month. This price is for a commercial building with one bedroom, and a shared bathroom outside. Until my girlfriend came after she graduated from Ubon vocational school in the same place, graduating from Home Textiles.

By that time I took my girlfriend to rent a better room that comes at an expensive price of 3,500 baht per month (including the bathroom). Because I still have 2 younger sisters studying at that time. The days passed, and I started to feel that working for a full year in Pattaya, I get bored with the monotonous work that I do every day. So I decided to go back to study for my bachelor’s degree again. I chose to take the exam and choose to study only at Silpakorn University. At that time, I thought that if I didn’t pass the exam, I wouldn’t study, but I wanted to give myself another chance to prove myself. As a result, I entered the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. At that time I only have 30,000 baht in savings. I just study for 2 months and I ran out of money. Therefore, I have to go out to get a job in Pattaya from a gallery that I worked with before, with a condition that I only work on Saturdays and Sundays after school on Fridays, which I have to depart in my trusted motorcycle from Bangkok to Pattaya on Friday evening.

At the end of Year 3, and Year 4, I had to choose a major. At that time, I decided to major in Thai art. I can’t do my best at that time. In the circumstances of all types of painters, all techniques, all fading, I have no direction. The reason is that I had to do a part-time drawing in order to pay my tuition feed. Therefore, it took me 6 years to graduate. Normally, the Bachelor’s degree program at Silpakorn University will take 5 years, but I’m a little special, I took 6 years. At that time, there were 9 professors who taught me and I was the only student sitting in my class at that time. It was worth the tuition fees because it feel like a special class for me only. Time flew by, and I learned how to draw black and white when I was in my Bachelor’s degree, before the thesis work, I have done the thesis in the Dharma series on the lotus leaf (almost not finished, the work is not very good, but there is a guideline).

The technique I use & Beginning of success

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree and continue my master’s degree immediately. On the first day of the semester, Ajarn Chalood Nimsamer told me “not to draw lotus leaves anymore”, so I went back to find new inspiration to see the phenomenon that occurs in rippled circles. Thus, I drew it and sent it to Ajarn and the results turned out to be excellent, passing the criteria. Moreover, Ajarn also praised me that “You also can make art, init?.” That piece I submitted to the contest “Toshiba” I won the best prize which is a work of birth announcement for me. Plus, my friends in the industry will call me “Wong Nam Pencil Khae”. I am the first persn who used that technique . Most of them say it’s Tempera oil paint and gray paint. But I used the strangest pastel charcoal pencil technique at that time, and that made me won the 56th National Art Award 2010.
