‘Wattanapong Yothaitiang’ has lived in Chiang Mai, the city that he describe as a perfect blend between fertile nature and cultural richness. He is originally from Maha Sarakham province, Northeastern Thailand. He received his Bachelor’s degree majoring in visual art from Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna.

 Get to know the artist ‘Wattanapong Yothaitiang’

‘Wattanapong Yothaitiang’ was born and, in his first 10 years, raised in Maha Sarakham province, Northeastern Thailand. Then his family moved to Phayao province. His passion toward art is within him since a very young age. And with school teacher’s suggestion, he enrolled to Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture in Vocational Certificate and Bachelor’s degree majoring in visual art at Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna.

Recently living in Chiang Mai as long fascinated by the perfect blend between fertile nature and cultural richness of its alive old town. And fully Being Chiang Mai people has fulfilled his art career as well as inspiration.

The Artist’s turning point

“By the time I was in High Vocational Certificate, I did sold my art work for the first time to collector who went to my faculty following my professor’s suggestion” explained the artist. He received handful of pay as a student back to those year. His art works were sold continually and that’s how he saw “Artist” as potential career. Moreover, he received an opportunity from The Gerard Collection, Muang Chiang Mai according to his professor introduction that he could arranged an exhibition and make sale in the gallery space. The owner of the gallery was also impressed by the artist’s work and bought plenty of them. “How amazing that being able to do what I’ve passioned about and still make a living”, added the artist.

Certain technique for certain massage

As an artist, Wattanapong uses variety techniques such as woodcut printmaking, watercolor prints, oil color painting, watercolor painting, and acrylic color painting. Certain technique has their own uniqueness and different ability in transferring certain massage. “If you want to express whatever through your work, knowing the nature of each technique is more than necessary”, said the artist. He further explained on how he choose for his own, “I would go by oil color for painting the sky as this color’s got the right amount of its stickiness out of its drier in nature, making its great for color mixing. Or if I’m painting the moon, I prefer acrylic as its semi opaque and fast drying that would be a great fit for color layering in creating shade and light.”    

The Woodcut Printmaking

The brief process of the oldest form of printmaking, Woodcut printmaking start with preparing woodblock which depend on the size of image and sketching design. Then tools carving a design into the surface of a wooden block. The raised areas that remain after the block has been cut are inked and printed, while the recessed areas that are cut away do not retain ink, and will remain blank in the final print. The block is then inked evenly by using a dauber or a roller. Then placed the block on the bed of a press. And a sheet of dampened paper is placed onto the inked surface of the block. Once printed onto its paper support, the woodcut’s design appears in reverse of the original on the block.

HOME

In this printmaking the artist aimed to deliver a close to heart’s massage, “HOME”. He explained that home is not only a locating place but a happy yet safe overall land forever will welcoming us. “No matter how hard life goes, coming back here would always cure and up lift us for being ready again to face whatever would come”, explained the artist.
