Description

About the artwork

Chootoun has been accustomed to the southern way of life from his childhood to present. This further leads to his love and connection with the culture as well as the nature. The Southern lifestyle has indicated the ethnological identity that has the hidden beauty which dominated spiritual living created by humans and nature.

Thainess and local identity are presented in Chootoun’s work, such as the design of the house, appliances that local people use, cultural traditions including habit of sufficiency living. Simplicity of the idea that we live, depend, and respect for nature. It has stimulated feelings and memories in the deep consciousness and is a tool that molds the artist to create love and relationship with nature into the artwork.

The hidden abstraction in the painting

The abstraction here does not refer to a painting that cannot be described but it is rather a feeling when the audience views his painting. Chootoun’s work can immediately indicate what it is. Only what is hidden is a warm feeling that attracts the audience. It is as though we are getting closer to an ideal life, even though we may not have experienced it before or they are just our thoughts.

Rubber plantation and the local lifestyle

Thailand is one of the largest rubber producing countries, with rubber production most prevalent in the southern part of the country. This is because the climatic condition is favorable for rubber cultivation in the country. Most people in the southern part of Thailand do a rubber tapping for living, while some people are hired for rubber tapping work, and some have their own rubber plantations. So, there are many houses of people that are located in the rubber plantation areas.

Get to know the artist

Niwat Chootoun is a Thai contemporary artist. He graduated a bachelor’s degree with the 2nd class honors and graduated a master’s degree from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. Chootoun participated in numerous exhibitions, both solo and group exhibitions. He also participated in the national stage contests and received many awards, such as the Painting Contest in Honor of His Majesty the King in 2011, the Best Award for “Golden Brush”, the Bua Luang Painting Contest which he received the 1st gold medal in 2011 and the 3rd bronze medal 3 times in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

In the beginning, Niwat Chootoun was inspired by Ajarn Damrong Wong-Uparaj, a national artist, that was a model of his painting. He discovered a technique for creating a thatched roof surface. By bringing dry grass to drag over the canvas to create traces while the color is still damp. This is a truly unique technique that makes Chootoun’s work unique and simple, yet beautiful.

Chootoun also uses a bird’s eye painting method which is the basis of Thai art painting. He uses neutral tones like brown and gray to convey a story through unmoving objects without characters, such as a hut on the surface of the water free from the movement of water or wind.  What is interesting is the details of the parts shown in the house, for example he presents the character of the house under the high ground. There is a wall covering that is polished and woven using bamboo. There is a terrace that sticks out and located above the water surface. It implies to the fishery occupation of the residents. Fisherman is the occupation of most people who live in the southern region which is the birthplace of Chootoun.

The painting also tells about the routines of people living in the house such as various types of appliances or materials. It is characterized by hanging from the wall or ceiling. Some of his artworks also have a dove cage. These reflect the image of ordinary people living a simple life. Chootoun also left blank areas in the background of the painting without showing details to help relax and catch the eye of the audiences to highlight the house. It is a technique of storytelling by arranging artistic elements that use the direction of the people’s path towards the house as a line of sight.

By viewing through his artwork, the audiences can recognize the value of folk wisdom in its tradition, ritual, belief, language, occupation, unity, and the simple way of life in Thai rural lifestyle that still carry on its characteristic during the globalization. As Chootoun believes in the basis of life in which people will still seek for peace and ability to rely on each other.
