About this artwork

Khongpuang conveys the stories of the coexistence between naturalism and consumerism in the 21st century. She thinks nature lovers today cannot deny the existence of a consumerist lifestyle. The theme of consumerism in this painting can also be shown through the use of Campbell’s soup cans as a subject. At the same time, those in the consumerism society world have a passion to get themselves in nature. So Khongpuang presents those cans by locating them in the natural scenery background. This is a way that she shows her interest to exploring every possibility in every way to find the perfect balance and beauty in the existence of these two worlds.

A message of Campbell’s soup can

Campbell’s soup was a symbol of the consumerist because it is a consumer and a mass-produced item. Inspired by the work of Andy Warhol, The Campbell’s Soup Cans, which was a response to this consumerism. Warhol put these objects into the limelight to force society to pay attention to them and to think about our own consumerism, and our own place within a consumer society. Likewise, Khongpuang did artwork in this setting, looking at consumer products and invites the viewer to reflect on consumerism.

What is consumerism?

Consumerism is the belief that personal wellbeing and happiness depends to a very large extent on the level of personal consumption, particularly on the purchase of material goods. It is a cultural model that promotes the acquisition of goods, and especially the purchase of goods, as a vehicle for personal satisfaction and economic stimulation. Consumerism associates with pervasive cultural attitude.
