Description

Natural material from silkworm

Thai silk is made from local Thai silkworm. There are several steps to produce each fabric, consisting of raising silkworm, reeling in the threads, dyeing, and weaving. The shine and gloss of indigenous Thai silk distinguishes it from other silks. As it is a natural material, Thai silk provides gentle touch to the skin and is well-ventilated.

What is Brocade silk?

Brocade (Yok Dok in Thai) is silk fabrics that are crafted using extra silk thread during the weaving process to produce an embossed or embroidered texture. Various details of the pattern are raised slightly above the surface of the silk fabric.

“Art on Fabric”

Brocade silk is a difficult procedure that demands extremely talented weavers. The pattern’s intricacy varies, but the more shuttles used, the more polished the ultimate effect. Although brocade silk has been around for a long time, the difficulty of making it meant that it was very rare in former times, so it was normally worn by royalty and nobility for special occasions.

Over three months of work to produce one piece

The whole process to make this one piece took over 3 months! Weaving process alone was around 45-60 days. A traditional weaver can produce about 12 to 15 centimeters of fabric a day only as every process is handmade and complicated. The weavers combine thread after thread to create one precious piece!

Pattern – Udon Roi Pee

“Udon Roi Pee” means hundred years old of Udon Thani province in the Isan (northeast) region. This design was created since 1994. As the name indicated, it was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Udon Thani. The design was inspired to wish prosperity to the land and people. Adding it to the fabric to bring good fortune to the owner.

Dedicated techniques
  • Khit (means “to raise” in the local dialect) – method of creating a design by which a weaver uses a stick to lift warp threads (horizontal) periodically throughout the fabric according to the designed pattern then insert a shuttle to place special weft and weft threads (vertical) across the fabric. A painstaking and intricate technique, the weaving of khit requires extraordinary skill and patience.

Certified with Thai Silk Standard

The piece is guaranteed with Blue Peacock standards!

Thai silk standard or Royal Peacock standard is a quality assurance for Thai silk established by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Queen of Thailand. To certify under these standards, each piece is inspected by a registered government inspector.

The standards define four grades of silk fabric produced only in Thailand. They represent different materials and procedure:

  • Gold Peacock – Thai silk fabric that is made of indigenous Thai silk threads and used traditional processes.

  • Silver Peacock – Thai silk fabric that is made of indigenous Thai silk threads and used traditional or some applied processes.

  • Blue Peacock – Thai silk fabric that is made of pure silk threads and used traditional hand weaving or machine weaving processes.

  • Green Peacock – Thai silk fabric that is made of silk threads blended with other fibers and used mixture of traditional and some modern processes.

Color Tone

Grey – it provides a discreet but profound feeling. The intention of this color was to make a simple color and not too dazzling because Khit technique added a shimmer pattern to this piece already.
