Description

SNCF stands for ‘Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français’ which means French National Railways in English, a state-owned railroads system of France which formed in 1938. The first railroad in France, from Saint-Étienne to Andrézieux, opened in 1827.

After World War I began, rail workers and equipment were requisitioned to transport soldiers. Behind the lines, rail companies struggled to find the labour they needed to maintain their infrastructure, and they began to recruit new workers, including prisoners of war and several thousand women. After the war, the Ministry of Public Works launched a master plan to electrify rail networks across France.

After World War II, trains were taken over by both new types of cars and Airplanes. Due to the poor performance of trains, SNCF had to adjust its strategy in order to survive. Any routes that cannot compete with cars and planes will be canceled. But doing just that is not enough. SNCF has to modernize. One of the boldest steps was to bring high-speed trains into service in 1981, which became one of the things the French were proud of until nowaday and the present world recognizes it as TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse).
