phuu.studio

— Natural Abstract artist from Thailand

Phuvaris or Phuu, also known as phuu.studio is a new generation artist producing art with the main emphasis on mood and emotion. With a background in architecture, phuu.studio channels the study of structure and body to his own pieces of work. The artist works with a technique unlike no other — one in which cannot be told to us, but his art form creates a range of scenarios: from the dream-like beach to the deep, dark depths of the forest. He communicates not only a place, but an emotion.

As humans, we link certain feelings with our surroundings as they are what we experience. A lot of the time, we do this with places. By linking a specific place to a certain feeling, we are able to transport ourselves back to the time we were there; that’s why we store these feelings deep inside our memory. This is the intention of the artist, to give his viewers a whiff of emotion — no matter what they may be.

"It all begins from a small passion, to bringing smiles to others, and finally self discovery."

Background

Before studying architecture for his bachelor’s degree, phuu.studio had always studied the subject of art since childhood but was set back by the creative restrictions drawn by his art teacher. After dropping the subject for a few years, he started working as a freelance artist with commission work but always struggled to find his identity. Doing freelance, he worked under certain guidelines, so he was curious how it would be to work under his own rules. He realized he hadn’t established a personal style and proceeded to start working on his own art. Without rules and obligations to follow as requested from his typical customers, he started art pieces that relaxes emotions. “I have this dream of turning a huge space into my art pieces — a place where you can feel the sea breeze from just looking at my work. I want to transport my customers to another setting; one they can consider their safe place. A little escape from reality, even if it’s just for a small moment,” phuu.studio explains.

As phuu.studio worked on his final thesis through his final year of university, a prompt given by his professor would soon develop into the mindset and thought processes he owns proudly today. “Do you have an image for your final thesis?”, his teacher asked during a discussion. After presenting his thesis idea to the class, many were skeptical about the proposal, but his professor fully supported it. This began the idea of indifference in mindset and work ethic – interpretation doesn’t draw from two definite sides. The idea reinforces his daily values as an artist, even when he wasn’t sure anyone was gonna support him, he knew that if he believed in it, something would eventually come about. He proved himself right. A stranger, completely unfamiliar to him, bought his artwork and reassured that there are people who are touched by the collection; this added onto his confidence and became one of the main pillars to his self esteem.

“I think it’s very important to be true to yourself. To have and know your identity can keep you grounded — it’s something we like to overlook, but as an artist I believe this is one of the starting points”, He tells. His first few works were an exploration of his style, but after fixed consistency and hard work, he managed to find a concept that fuels his passion. Finally, something to make him feel like he could keep painting.

“As an artist, when people look at my art, I aim to look for two responses: One. That my artwork is stress relieving. Two. Any form of constructive criticism. I feel that the only way to improve is to listen,” phuu.studio states. The inspiration behind his collections are said to be derived purely from emotion. Specifically, the Oceanic Tense collection, a series of the sea in its different forms, was created through the desire to go to the beach. “I found that painting this healed me emotionally and was a quick escape from reality for me,” He recalls. “I want it to be a quick escape for the viewers as well, almost like looking at a fish tank – you can stare at it for hours and hours. I want my work to feel like that,” phuu.studio states.

When asked about his abstract art, phuu.studio explains that it is an artwork of his emotions and an outlet for him to build around what he was feeling at the moment. Of course interpretation is up to the viewers, but delivering a rush of emotion to them is what makes a successful piece to him. Taking sentiment as a souvenir from his work is a constant goal — “There is complexity within itself. Some art pieces I’ve seen are often detached from its story or context; a painting I saw in France made me really impressed even though I don’t quite understand their language and culture.. I think that pieces like those are what makes art a powerful tool. I want my art to do the same thing – communicate without language,” He concludes.

The idea comes to him through waves of emotion and he works from finish to start. Having a full picture in his mind, he paints until he reaches the visual in his head. “There were definitely some changes along the way, but I don’t really stray away from my ideas completely; I just add a few tweaks that I think would fit better or look more suitable,” He describes his work process. The high level of imagination this artist possesses will capture your attention to the beautiful sceneries he has stocked in his mind.

Technique

phuu.studio describes his art style as ‘nature abstract’, where the form is painted based on emotion while the image based on his emotion. He started off with acrylic on canvas, but found that it didn’t match the mood and tone of his work as the colors appeared to be too pigmented. With this problem, he was able to adapt his work style, going back to his watercolor paintings and the techniques he used with that art style – the artist discovered a method that would incorporate both. Thus making his paintings feel more dreamy and less dense.

He also has some work from his architecture projects that helped build his foundation in art. He focuses massively on depth, which is a factor he enjoys working on ever since university and implements this expertise through the Oceanic Tense collection. His techniques wrap around the process of his concept creation, adapting to the fixed image in his head. With a clear goal, phuu.studio proves he is a mastermind in visualization.
