Panuwat Kamdee
— Modern Thai Artist
‘Panuwat Kamdee’ or Pay received a bachelor’s degree from Faculty of Arts and Architecture, majoring in Thai Arts, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna.
Background
The inspiration started from my love of drawing cartoons since childhood, resulting in accumulated creativity. It is like something that has been with him since his younger years and has been used to create pieces of art today, which makes each piece unique.
From a professor’s suggestion, he, for the first time encountered a proper exhibition. “The opportunity I got was the gateway of becoming an artist”, said Pay. He was fulfilled as well as his creativity. “I got to meet people, specifically those who admired and appreciated my artwork is such a wonderful experience. Exchanging ideas had opened up my perspective toward arts that it is an eternal form”, he added. He continually improves his work until he got his recent proud piece, “Suea Long”. “Suea Long, or in English translation is Lost Tiger, is my masterpiece as I had exhibited in The New Gen Connected Art Fest, Songkhla. Being known as an artist by both national and international is nothing more but pride”, he concluded with a heart warming smile.
Technique
Traditional Thai Lanna painting style using ancient folk techniques such as chalk and powder paint, brings back the story of modern content and current events to create a contemporary work that is easy to understand. This also raises awareness of Thai paintings; having different techniques used can make Thai art more interesting, especially a technique based on local knowledge.
