Krit Kerdsamai
— Modern Thai Artist
Krit Kerdsamai is a Thai artist and an alumni of Silpakorn University. His fascination for toys and models inspires his work to be based on the human imagination. As play-toys can bring forth creativity and one’s wildest imagination, the artist intends to represent those intangible visions through his artwork. The artist incorporates Thai-literature based elements into his works to represent imagination and combines this element with modern-day objects, creating intended juxtaposition within his work.
Concept
His concept is based on his childhood memories and his experience with his playtoys. The vivid memory of these art toys inspire him to sculpt one of his own, based on his imagination. The idea of wild imagination is incorporated into the thought process behind the piece. Bringing in a range of creatures that appear during a child’s imagination while playing with their toys bring forth new forms to introduce to the world. With many of the creatures being based on Thai folklore, Kerdsamai merges modernity with traditionality. Adding technological aspects to a mythological creature derived from cultural tales adds an interesting twist to the overall piece.
It elevates the original form of the creature while enhancing its features at the same time. This would allow the viewers to feel the strength of the figure and develop an understanding as to what it is even without cultural context. Having this combination opens up the art toy to more interpretations and makes it easier to resonate with the general audience.
