Kanchai Sangphet

— Modern Thai Artist

Kanchai Sangphet also known as Cake is a 22 year old talented artist from the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in Painting and Media Arts at KMITL (King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang). He is a young Thai artist whose artwork are inspired by the natural scenery of the countryside that he encountered. His work features a dreamy visual of the sceneries that represent the peaceful memories throughout his life.

Experiencing many obstacles and difficulties in his childhood, Sangphet followed the spiritual discovery of life based on Buddhist references on the truths of life. His inner exploration during this time of his life allows him to find peace in his mind and convey the lessons he learned in life through his paintings.

His inspiration behind art stems from his childhood experiences. “I normally drew, but didn’t feel like doing it much. When I got to highschool, I focused my studies on the science and mathematics programs to get into good, prestigious universities. Nevertheless, I wasn’t happy at all, so I decided to attend special art tutoring for a few months, which made me realize what I was much happier doing,” Sangphet recalls.

Sangphet then went to study at the Fine Arts Program at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology for his Bachelor’s degree. He started to then understand art to a level where he knows he can continue it for his career.

Sangphet started professionally making art during his second year. Facing difficulties and different challenges around building concepts, he tried to study many subject matters in hopes of drawing inspiration from them. It made him realize that the more he tried, the harder it is to find anything. “I began to embrace this problem and saw it from another perspective. This was also when I began to study Dhamma and understood myself on a deeper level. Understanding the truth of life and accepting each problem as I face them became a big inspiration to making my artwork,” Sangphet states.

His plans for now is to continue his career as an independent artist and develop his skills to keep painting landscapes of nature. In the future however, if good opportunities arise within the art industry, he would catch the change. “I’m focusing on the ‘now’ before anything else,” Sangphet concludes happily.
